The Better Massage Approach: Manual Lymphatic Drainage
-
Your lymphatic system is one of the most important — and most overlooked — systems in your body. It cleanses and nourishes every cell, filters toxins, transports immune cells, hormones, proteins, and fatty acids, and plays a critical role in your body's ability to heal and regenerate. When lymphatic flow becomes sluggish or overloaded, your whole body feels it.
Unlike your circulatory system, which relies on the heart to pump blood, your lymphatic system depends on tiny muscular units called lymphangions to move fluid through the body. Stress, fatigue, surgery, trauma, infection, and muscle tension can all slow that process down — leaving you feeling heavy, run down, or stuck.
Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is a gentle, rhythmic skin technique that stimulates the lymphatic vessels just beneath the skin. By following a specific sequence, MLD encourages lymphatic fluid to move more efficiently — supporting cellular waste removal, immune function, and overall health. This is not a massage. There is no lotion, no oil, and no deep pressure. Just intentional, light touch that works with your body's own natural drainage system.
-
MLD has both physical and emotional benefits. Clients often notice:
Improved immune system function
Increased energy and mental clarity
Decreased fluid retention
Reduced pain and inflammation
Relief from skin conditions such as acne, eczema, and rosacea
Faster recovery after injury, surgery, or cosmetic procedures — including improved appearance of scarring, bruising, and swelling
Improvement in congestive conditions like chronic sinusitis and seasonal allergies
Reduction in the appearance of cellulite
Healthier, more radiant skin and reduction in fine lines
Deeper, more restful sleep
Decreased anxiety
Fewer headaches and migraines
Support for the body's natural detoxification process
MLD is also especially beneficial post-childbirth — helping the body release excess fluid, process hormones, and normalize milk production. It is particularly effective for mothers who have had a cesarean section, whether recent or years prior.
Those living with autoimmune conditions (such as Lupus or Rheumatoid Arthritis), neurological conditions (such as Multiple Sclerosis, Bell's Palsy, or Trigeminal Neuralgia), or Fibromyalgia often respond very well to this gentle method.
Note: Autoimmune thyroid conditions and hyperthyroidism must be approached with caution. With chronic illness, we may begin with shorter sessions to gauge your response.
-
MLD does more than move fluid. It also encourages your nervous system to shift into a parasympathetic — "rest and digest" — state, where true healing begins. Because MLD works by re-educating your lymphatic system to flow more efficiently, multiple sessions are recommended. Lymphatic vessels respond best to more frequent treatment initially, then move to maintenance over time. Think of it less like a single treatment and more like a learning process for your body.
-
Your body will be working. Give it what it needs.
Hydrate. Proper hydration is critical — it reduces the likelihood of any detox response after treatment.
Rest and eat light. Plan to rest and eat whole, easy-to-digest foods after your session so your body can focus on processing the increased lymphatic demand.
Increased urination is normal for up to 24–48 hours after a session — your body is doing its job.
When beginning MLD, it is possible for acute symptoms to temporarily increase, or for detox symptoms like fatigue or mild headache to occur. These typically resolve quickly and can be a sign of lymphatic congestion. If this happens, we may adjust the rate of drainage in future sessions.
-
MLD is not appropriate for everyone. Please do not book if you have any of the following:
Active infection
Organ failure
Heart, kidney, or liver disease
Diabetes that is not well-regulated
Undiagnosed skin conditions
Deep vein thrombosis (within the past 2 years)
History of tuberculosis or Cat Scratch Fever
If you have a condition that tends to flare — such as an autoimmune or allergic condition, or migraines — please wait until the current flare has subsided before booking. Some medical conditions will require doctor approval prior to treatment.
Please note: I do not treat Lymphedema at this time. If you are seeking Lymphedema treatment, please look for a LANA Certified Lymphedema Therapist.
-
If you receive cosmetic injectables such as Botox or fillers, it is recommended to wait at least 4 weeks after your injections before receiving MLD. MLD can accelerate the rate at which these products wear off — which makes it a great option if you are looking to "detox" from Botox, but something to be aware of if you want to maintain your results. This also applies to steroid and stem cell injections.
